What is Tenant Harassment, and How Can You Avoid it?

What is Tenant Harassment, and How Can You Avoid it?

Tenant harassment is any action a landlord or property manager takes that is intended to make a tenant feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or unwelcome in their home or rental property. Tenant harassment can take many forms, including verbal or physical abuse, threats, intimidation, or excessive demands for access to the tenant’s unit.

Examples of tenant harassment include:

  • Making frequent unannounced visits to the tenant’s unit
  • Refusing to make necessary repairs or maintenance requests
  • Threatening to evict the tenant without cause or notice
  • Removing or tampering with the tenant’s personal property
  • Entering the tenant’s unit without permission or notice
  • Making discriminatory remarks or actions against the tenant.

If you are a tenant experiencing harassment, there are steps you can take to void it, including:

  1. Document the harassment: Record all incidents, including dates, times, and details of what was said or done.
  2. Contact your landlord: Let your landlord or property manager know about the harassment and allow them to resolve the issue. Make sure to keep a record of your communication with them.
  3. Contact local housing authorities: If your landlord is unresponsive or uncooperative, you can contact local housing authorities, such as a tenant advocacy group or a local housing authority, for assistance.
  4. Seek legal help: If you believe you are experiencing illegal harassment, seek the help of a qualified attorney who can help you understand your legal rights and options.

It’s important to remember that tenant harassment is illegal and should not be tolerated. If you are experiencing harassment, take action to protect your rights and seek the help you need to resolve the issue.
